Platinum in the automotive industry market

Platinum is one of the most rare precious metals in the world. The annual volume of its manufacture of about 250 tons. Half of the crude platinum is used in automotive catalysts, that helps environment protection. By means of platinum it is easier to stimulate the decomposition of hydrocarbons from exhaust gases of cars.

Growing of demand for platinum in the world is the key to high prices. One of the factors increasing demand for this metal is the growth of its use in automotive catalysts. The platinum market should be grateful for it to the Green Party, because it is the introduction of more stringent measures to curb harmful emissions into the atmosphere has led to the fact that almost all new cars are equipped with catalytic converters for the neutralization of exhaust gases.

More active use of platinum was promoted by such factors, as the further increase in sales of diesel cars, growth of release of small cars, introduction of more more stringent emission standards and increased use of catalysts based on platinum instead of palladium catalysts.

New requirements regarding the composition of exhaust gases in China have increased the average specific consumption of platinum group metals in the manufacture of catalytic converters, filters, exhaust and general growth in consumption of these metals in the industry.

In Europe growth of sales of diesel vehicles became a primary factor of increase in demand for platinum. Sales of diesel cars in Western Europe in recent years have grown by 7% and the proportion of this type of cars on the market reached 40%. Considering that diesel cars are only used platinum catalysts, this increase is largely attributed to a surge in demand for platinum. The introduction of incentive schemes in several European countries has helped to maintain the level of automobile production. In the North America and Asia in expansion of consumption of catalysts on a platinum basis has resulted steady growth of manufacture of the small cars.

Both in Europe and North America a number of manufacturers more commonly used platinum-based catalysts in the production of certain models of gasoline-powered cars by reducing the use of palladium catalysts.

All these factors have stimulated the largest platinum mining companies to increase output.

The forecast

After some recession caused by a world economic crisis, rates of secondary extraction of platinum have started to be restored with introduction in a number of the countries of the various programs directed on expansion of the market of recycled materials. In particular, in 2011, is expected to increase demand for platinum in the automotive industry with respect to indicators of 2010. Experts predict an increase in the volume of secondary metal recovery from spent catalytic converters, filters, exhaust gases will rise because the purchase of new cars and most part of cars will arrive on the scrap market.
