 HOLLAND HAULS IN ANOTHER WIN

 Portland, Ore. (8/31/01) -- Championships are on the line as the season winds down at Portland Speedway. Dale Holland of Portland, Ore. continued his late season charge with a win in the NASCAR ShorTrack Sportsman Series, with Scott Puncochar of Hillsboro, Ore. claiming another win in the NASCAR Street Stock division. Audra Jean and Dan Cherington collected wins in the WAR! and Figure 8 classes respectively.

 Scott Winebarger of Portland, Ore. set a new record in qualifying in the Sportsman class with a lap of 17.505/68.483 mph. Jay Estes of Oregon City, Ore. collected his first Trophy Dash win of the season  in the Sportsman class with Dale Holland, George Simms, Jeremy Brookshire taking Heat Race victories. Jody Tanner started the 30-lap main event on the pole but lost the lead as the handle on his mount was loose. Doug Mitchell assumed control of the race and stretched out his lead on the field until a freight train in the form of Brad "The Tornado" Tanner rolled by on lap 6.

 Tanner continued to set the pace and lengthened his lead on then second place runner Estes. By lap 15 Estes closed the gap on Tanner and coming out of turn four Tanner lost the handle and spun. Estes was sent to the rear for incidental contact. Mitchell led the field on the restart but was unable to hold off Holland who used the low groove to make his way to the front. Mitchell lost a top five finish when Andy Church got into the rear of the Timber Wolf car causing Mitchell to spin. Holland then held off Darrell Smith for the win followed by point leader Martin Stanwood, Brad Tanner, and Jay Estes rounding out the top five.

 Stanwood maintains his championship point lead over Holland by just 21 markers going into the final two races. Brad Stanwood moves into third place, with Brad Tanner in fourth and Jay Estes rounding out the top five.

 Scott Puncochar continued his march to a second straight NASCAR Street Stock title by claiming the 30-lap main event over a determined Brad Tanner. Dustin Wilkenson rallied for third, Jeff Brookshire, and Dave Cannon rounding out the top five. Puncochar maintains a 101 point lead over Tanner as the championship will go down to the final two events. Dustin Wilkenson, Tracy Jones, and Curt Nusom fill out the top five in the points race. Puncochar picked up the victory in the Trophy Dash, with Tracy Jones, Jeff Brookshire, Brian Puncochar, and Scott Puncochar taking wins in the Heat Races.

 Dan Cherington continued his mastery of the Figure 8 division by claiming the checkers in the 12-lap sprint for the 4-cylinder division. Cherington started at the rear of the field and quickly moved his way through the pack and assumed the point by lap 6. Cherington was followed to the line by his brother Joe, John Mayfield, Kelly Nace, and Ron Henderson. Dan Cherington continues to top the point standings over his brother by 21 points going into the final event. Kelly Nace stands third, with John Mayfield, and Ron Henderson rounding out the top five. Dan Cherington won the 4-lap Trophy Dash with Nace and Joe Cherington winning the Heat Races.

 Audra Jean of Portland, Ore. collected her first victory of the season in the all-female WAR! division as the ladies hit the third-mile Bud Bowl for a 10-lap dash. Jean was followed to the line by Jackie Graham, points leader Kari Puncochar, Lisa Jesson-Tanner, and Nikki Schram. Puncochar maintains a 15 point lead over Tanner going into the final event with Corrine Flath in third, and Pam Graham and Paula Smith rounding out the top five. Lisa Jesson-Tanner took home the hardware in the Trophy Dash, with Corrine Flath and Paula Smith taking victories in the Heat Races.

 The racing action continues Friday, September 7 as 3M Night at the Races host the Miss Portland Speedway 2002 contest and championship Race for WAR! Also on tap will be the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Grand American Modifieds, ShorTrack Sportsman, and Street Stocks. Spectator gates will open at 5:00 pm with racing beginning at 6:45 pm.
