HOLLAND CELEBRATES
BIRTHDAY WITH WIN
By Bob Kehoe
PORTLAND, OR (May 25, 2001)
With the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Grand American Modified Division drivers
having the week off, the Shorttrack Sportsman field stepped up to the plate as the nights
Feature Division at the Portland Speedway.
As a great way to celebrate his
birthday, Dale Holland drove to his second Main Event win of the season from his starting
position on the outside of the second row. Finishing second was Doug Mitchell, with Jody
Tanner and Darrell Smith coming home third and fourth, respectively.
The 30-lap feature, slowed by several
caution periods, provided a close race for the glory between Brad Stanwood and Holland,
who came into tonights race second in the division points race. Starting from the
pole, Brad Stanwood stayed up front until lap 27, when he tangled with a backmarker in
Turn 4. Unfortunately for Stanwood, his car suffered front suspension damage and was
unable to continue. This brought out another caution and Holland moved up to assume the
lead in his Camaro sponsored by Dancin Bare/Holland Automotive and Rapid Fire
Engines. In the final three-lap dash to the checkered flag, Holland was able to fend off a
charging Doug Mitchell. "I had to stand on it hard to stay ahead of Doug, but we
pulled it off," said Holland in victory lane.
The Sportsman Division was the only
group to hold qualifying earlier in the day, with division points leader Martin Stanwood
setting the fastest lap of 17.712 seconds. Second and third fastest qualifiers were Brad
Tanner (18.237) and Jody Tanner (18.506). Sportsman Heat Race victories went to Brad
Tanner and Holland.
The scheduled 30-lap A Main for the
always competitive and entertaining Street Stock Division was shortened to a timed event
at 23 laps, due to the number of cautions. In the final green-white-checker dash to the
finish, it was another victory for Brad Tanner in his Jodys Bar & Grill/Portland
Clutch & Brake/B& M Machine Camaro. The week before, Tanner had wins in both the
Sportsman and Street Stock main events.
Tanner steadily worked his way through
the field to eventually take over the lead from early leader Tracy Jones. Chasing Jones in
the early part of the race was Curt Nusom. When the checkered flag was waved, Herb Thomas
grabbed the runner-up slot while Scott Puncochar came home third. The fourth position went
to Jones.
The Street Stocks staged four Heat
Races. The winners were Brad Tanner, Dustin Wilkenson, Dennis Krohling and Scott
Puncochar.
The 20-lap Figure 8 Main Event victory
was taken by Dan Cherington, whose Dustys Machine Shop/Circle H Enterprises Datsun
was followed across the line by brother Joe. Ron Henderson maneuvered to a third place
finish, ahead of Chris Page in fourth. The two Figure 8 Heat Races were won by Dan
Cherington and Chris Page.
Tonight was also the second season
event for the Speedways Womens Auto Racing (WAR!) Division sponsored by The
Woodshed Restaurant. Jackie Graham was the Main Event winner in her Perfection Engine
Service/Goin Towin Chevrolet and Corrine Flath finished second. Third and
fourth, respectively, were Wendy Schwartzkopf and Audra Jean. Divisional Heat Race wins
were recorded by Kari Puncochar and Audra Jean.
Trophy Dash victories for the night
were as follows: Bombers - Randy Ashley; Figure 8 - Joe Cherington; Street Stocks - Brad
Tanner; and Sportsman - Clyde White.

Car Enduro 300 laps on the Speedways Monster Half-Mile clay oval will
be held on May 28. The days action will also feature a rollover contest. Gates will
