NUSOM
NABS SECOND STREET STOCK VICTORY
Portland, Ore.
(July 3, 2001) Curt Nusom of Portland captured his second win of the season Tuesday night
in the Street Stock class at Portland Speedway-The Dirt Track as Goodyear presented the
18th Annual Crash-Bang Extravaganza. Brent Beall returned to win in the Figure 8 cars, and
Wendy Schwartzkopf collected her first ever main event win in the WAR! division.
In Street
Stock action Dennis Krohling of Vancouver, Wash. won the "C" main event and it
was Dundee Oregon's Willy Thom winning the "B" main event. 18 cars grided for
the 30-lap "A" main event with Brian Puncochar of Hillsboro, Ore. starting on
the pole. Divisional front runners, Scott Puncochar and Brad "The Tornado"
Tanner started deep in the field and had plenty of traffic to negotiate through in order
to get to the front.
In the early
laps Herb Thomas made his presence felt as he used the outside groove to rocket in to the
fourth position. Curt Nusom hung on to the back bumper of B. Puncochar throughout the
first 20 laps. Tanner had an off night as two spins left the second place points
challenger with a broken tie rod and a 12th place finish.
Nusom was able
to get Puncochar on lap 25 and hold on for the win of Puncochar, Dan Harris, Dave Cannon,
and Brian Overturf. Scott Puncochar still leads the points race over Tanner by 50 points.
Willy Thom jumps into 3rd place, with Tracy Jones, and Dustin Wilkenson rounding out the
top five.
"Winning
two races this year is great," Nusom said. "I'd like to thank Brian Puncochar
for running a good clean race. Anytime you get to the last couple of laps things can
happen."
The normally
"money in the bank" Dan Cherington was bitten by the two dollar part gremlins as
he was sidelined in Figure 8 action due to a faulty coil wire. Brent Beall made a
triumphed return from a month's lay off to win the 25-lap feature.
"We had
some problems in the heat race but we were ready for the main," Beall said. "I'd
like to thank Beall Transport Equipment for giving me this car and we'll see you next
week."
Kelly Nace
raced through the stout Figure 8 field to record his bet finish of the season in second
place. Ray Perry finished third, with Ken Warford in fourth and Robert Jordaine in fifth.
Dan Cherington still maintains the point lead over his brother Joe Cherington by four
points. The figure 8 cars return this Friday night July 6.
Wendy
Schwartzkopf won the 25-lap WAR! main event for her first career racing victory. The
all-female division continues to provide fans and competitors alike exciting racing action
each and every event. Tonight was no exception as Schwartzkopf started on the pole
and lead every lap to take home the checkers. Schwartzkopf was followed to the line Kari
Puncochar, Jackie Graham, Cindy Thom, and Pam Graham.
All
Schwartzkopf could say in victory lane was, "Wow." "The truck was perfect,
and I am so excited."
Racing action
resumes Friday, July 6 as Portland Speedway hosts Whelan Engineering Night at the
Races presented by Smokehouse BBQ Company featuring the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Grand
American Modifieds, NASCAR ShorTrack Sportsman, Street Stock, Figure 8, and Bumpin'
Bombers. Spectator Gates open at 5:00 pm with racing beginning at 6:45 pm. Ticket prices
