Portland, Oregon, April 7. A capacity crowd of over 5,000 spectators filled the historic Portland Speedway as radio station KUPL hosted the Opening Night "New Millennium Celebration." Traffic on I-5 kept the crowds coming to well after 8pm, but the action on the track was worth the wait.

For the first time in his career, Brandon Riehl of Portland took the checkered flag ahead of 17 other competitors in NASCAR Weekly Racing Series action. Exide Shortrack Series Limited Sportsman standout Scott Winebarger, used patience and the outside groove to dominate the Limited Sportsman main event. Brad Hanken won in Accel Street Stock action, and 22 "bumpin-Bombers" thrilled the electrified crowd.

Twenty Late Models checked in the back gate. Michael Short and Randy Allen had trouble in practice, which left eighteen NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Late Models to battle for 40 laps. Tony Schmidt set fast time with a lap of 20.579, well of Greg Biffles track record. Schmidt started forth due to a 4-car invert. Eric Sayre took control early and was challenged by Rod Schultz throughout the first 17 laps. Dan Obrist brought out the first caution on lap 3 due to a blown left front tire and contact with the turn 3 wall. Sayre set the pace on the restart, on lap 17 Sayre and Schultz got together in turn 4, when the smoke cleared Sayre was in the wall and Schultz was given a black flag for the contact. Brandon Riehl worked his way to the front from his eighth starting position and by lap 20 he was in command and won the feature going away. Rounding out the top five were Eric Dalquist, Chris Gaboury, Tony Schmidt, and J R Perrott.

Scott Winebarger started ninth in the Exide Shortrack Limited Sportman 20 lap main event. Winebarger’s car was hooked up and no one could catch him, as he dominated the race. Robert Eubanks, Brad Stanwood, Dale Holland, and Brad Tanner followed Winebarger to the line.

In Accel Street Stock action, Brad Hanken won the "A" main event but it was Brad Tanner in the #46 that stole the show. Tanner started at the back of the twelve car "C" main and won, then started at the rear of the "B" main, and with the help of a caution, was able to cool his tires enough to take the checkered in the "B" main. Tanner finished the "A" main in twelfth place. The top ten in the Street stock feature were Hanken, Sonny Sayre, Ray Elwess, Don Jenner, and in fifth, Scott Puncochar, followed by Dan Westcott, Mike Walters, James Feijo, Willy Thom, and Anthony Catalano.

The Best of Show Bumpin’ Bombers thrilled the crowd in a spin to win smoke fest. Twenty-two Bombers stormed to the quarter mile and the mayhem began when Jim Nass gave the command let loose. Jeff Brookshire took the first event ahead of Ric Fors, and then it was Fors turn to light up the night, as he put on the show in the second main event.

The next event on the Portland Speedway calendar is Friday, April 14, Irontech Welding & Industrial Supply night at the races. This event will feature the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Late Models in twin main event action and the Exide Shortrack Series Limited Sportsman on the monster half mile oval. The Accel Street Stocks and Bumpin’ Bombers are set to battle on the quarter mile oval. Gates will open at 5 PM and racing roars off the line at 7 PM with Trophy Dashes and Heat Races, followed by main events.
